Do you have departures from Swansboro?

Our regular pickup is 6800 Emerald Drive in Emerald Isle. Several of our routes, including the Sunset Cruise and the ICW Scenic Cruise, run along the ICW and Bogue Sound toward Swansboro.

Where exactly do we meet, and where do I park?

Meet at the Emerald Isle Boat Ramp, 6800 Emerald Drive, Emerald Isle, NC 28594. Keep right all the way down the hill and continue straight back to the single-car parking lot directly in front of the boat ramps. Please avoid the truck-and-trailer parking (the extra-long spaces). Arrive 20 minutes before your start time. Questions about finding us? Call Captain Edward at 910-448-4218.

Do you offer custom private charters?

Yes. If you'd like your own length, route or stops for a birthday, a family trip, a photo outing, shelling or a holiday outing, call or email us. See Custom Private Charters.

Can you take more than 6 guests?

Yes. Each boat takes up to 6 guests, and larger groups are welcome with advance notice. Call 910-448-4218 or email info@soundsidetours.com as early as you can so we can set it up.

Yes. Every trip is booked by a single party, with 2 to 6 guests per boat.

How do I book?

Check availability and book online with the Book Now button on this page, or call 910-448-4218.

When should I arrive?

Please arrive at least 20 minutes before departure. That gives you time to gather your things and use the restroom before boarding.

How much do your boat tours cost?

Every trip is private, so you pay for your boat, not by the seat.

  • ICW Scenic Cruise (2 hours): $150 for 2 guests, plus $40 for each extra guest
  • Sunset Cruise (2 hours): $150 for 2 guests, plus $50 for each extra guest

On the Boat

What kind of boat do you use?

A 24 ft Carolina Yachts boat. It was custom-made for touring, is easy to clean and sanitize, and is built to US Coast Guard safety guidelines.

Is there a bathroom on the boat?

Sorry, there is no bathroom on board. We recommend using the restrooms at the docks before we leave. In an emergency, we'll make every effort to get you to the closest available facility.

Are life jackets provided?

Yes. Type I US Coast Guard approved life jackets are on board in adult and child sizes.

Is the boat good for first-time boaters?

Our 24 ft Carolina Yachts boat is very stable, so kids and first-time boaters can enjoy the ride comfortably. Plan for sun and wind on the water.

Can we bring food and drinks?

Yes, snacks and drinks are welcome. Please let us know the size of your cooler or bags. Please, no open containers on the boat.

How should I dress?

Dress for the weather. Out on the water you'll have sun, wind and sometimes rain. We recommend sun hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, non-marking waterproof shoes and clothes that can get wet. Weather on the Crystal Coast can be unpredictable. Our boat's T-top gives you some shade.

Can we swim on the trip?

Yes. You're welcome to swim at the stops on the Shark Tooth Adventure, the Shelling Adventure and the Serious Shellers Cruise, and on Custom Private Charters. The Sunset Cruise and the ICW Scenic Cruise are cruising trips and don't include swim time.

Tours and Wildlife

Which tour should I choose?

  • Fossil shark tooth hunting: Shark Tooth Adventure, 2 hours
  • Shelling with a mix of cruising: Shelling Adventure, 3 hours
  • Serious shell hunting with lots of walking: Serious Shellers Cruise, 5 hours
  • Evening views: Sunset Cruise, 2 hours
  • Relaxed sightseeing and wildlife: ICW Scenic Cruise, 2 hours
  • Holiday lights (Nov 15 – Dec 25): Christmas Light Cruise, 1.5 hours
  • Camping on Bear Island: Bear Island Camping Drop-Off and Pick-Up
  • Your own length, route or stops: Custom Private Charters

Will we see dolphins?

Dolphins are often seen on most of our tours, along with ospreys, eagles, pelicans, egrets, rays and deer. They're wild animals, though, so sightings can't be guaranteed.

Which tour is best for dolphins, kids or couples?

For dolphins and wildlife, try the ICW Scenic Cruise or the Sunset Cruise, though sightings can't be guaranteed. For kids and first-time shellers, the Shelling Adventure is a great fit. For couples, the Sunset Cruise. Families and friends also love the Christmas Light Cruise.

Can I propose on a trip?

Absolutely. Proposals are welcome, and these trips make lovely settings: the Sunset Cruise, the ICW Scenic Cruise, the 3-hour Shelling Adventure and the 5-hour Serious Shellers Cruise. Call 910-448-4218 so we can help plan the moment.

Can we bring a picnic?

Yes. Picnics need more than 2 hours, so we recommend the 3-hour Shelling Adventure, the 5-hour Serious Shellers Cruise or a Custom Private Charter. Bring your own food and drinks (no open containers on the boat).

What shells can we find?

Guests search for sand dollars, Scotch bonnets, olive shells, whelks and shark teeth. See our Crystal Coast Shelling Guide, or try the Shark Tooth Adventure for a trip focused on shark teeth.

Do you stop at the shark tooth islands?

We stop at several shark tooth islands in Bogue Sound, shoreline spots where dark fossil teeth wash up. They're part of the 2-hour Shark Tooth Adventure, the 3-hour Shelling Adventure and the 5-hour Serious Shellers Cruise. Finds are never guaranteed, but every hunt is part of the fun.

Can we keep the shells we find?

Please take only empty shells, and leave anything alive where you found it.

Can you drop us off for camping on Bear Island?

Yes. Our Bear Island Camping Drop-Off and Pick-Up takes up to 4 guests and all gear, carries your gear to and from your campsite, and lets you choose your drop-off and pick-up times. You reserve your own campsite through Hammocks Beach State Park. If you don't see your date or time available, please call 910-448-4218.

What time is the Sunset Cruise?

Sunset departure times change with the seasons. You'll see the open times for your date when you click Book Now.

When does the Christmas Light Cruise run?

From November 15 through December 25.
